Why Your Video Link Won’t Embed on Patreon — and How to Fix It
Learn how to distinguish a source-file problem from a player-link problem and a Patreon preview problem before republishing your post.
Read article →Choose between a direct file and adaptive streaming based on viewer connections, browser compatibility and the delivery infrastructure you can maintain.

An MP4 can contain different codecs, resolutions and bitrates. A browser may understand the container while being unable to decode the video or audio inside it. H.264 with AAC is a common compatibility choice, but always test your actual files and audience devices. Renaming another format to .mp4 does not convert it.
A direct MP4 is a straightforward starting point for a small library or an existing server. Support byte ranges and place metadata near the beginning for faster startup and seeking. The viewer generally receives a fixed rendition; a large file intended for editing can be a poor delivery choice on a mobile connection. You still need sensible encoding rather than relying on the file extension.
HLS uses a manifest and media segments. An adaptive master playlist can advertise several qualities, allowing a suitable player to respond to network conditions. A .m3u8 address alone does not guarantee adaptive quality: a playlist may contain only one rendition. Producing multiple renditions requires encoding work somewhere in your pipeline.
Every nested playlist, audio track, segment and key must be reachable with the right access policy. Relative paths resolve from their playlist locations. Expiring signatures must remain valid for the required viewing session. Browser players need appropriate CORS across the resource chain; a top-level manifest that opens successfully is only the first part of the test.
For short clips on reliable connections, a well-prepared MP4 may be entirely adequate. For longer episodes, mixed mobile networks and a wider audience, adaptive HLS can improve delivery flexibility. It also introduces more files, encoding settings and opportunities for configuration mistakes. A single VPS serving HLS does not automatically become a geographically distributed CDN.
Cloudflare Stream and Bunny Stream provide managed processing and delivery products. A self-managed workflow gives more control but requires you to produce and maintain its outputs. Compare the complete storage, encoding and traffic costs, not just the monthly server rental. Managed and self-managed approaches can both be sensible for different creators.
RedShoreMedia accepts compatible direct MP4, WebM and HLS sources, and offers a Cloudflare account connection. Adding an MP4 link does not generate new HLS renditions or repair unsupported codecs. The original provider continues to serve the media and charge for its delivery. Bunny’s own Patreon workflow also remains a valid independent choice.
Use the tester to inspect the actual source and then check a temporary link in Patreon. A successful preview on one device is not proof of universal compatibility. Try startup, sound, seeking and a slower mobile connection. Keep the setup that produces a dependable experience you can operate, rather than choosing a format because its name sounds more advanced.
Preview a compatible video without an account, then create a three-hour link to test in a real Patreon post.
